The producer

The producers of the film The Machinist claim that Christian Bale dropped from about 173 pounds in weight down to about 110 pounds in weight to make this film. They also claim that Bale actually wanted to drop down to 100 pounds, but that they would not let him go below 120 out of fear that his health could be in too much danger if he did. His diet consisted of one can of tuna and an apple per day. His 63-pound weight loss is said to be a record for any actor for a movie role. He regained the weight in time for his role in Batman Begins.

M&Ms were inspired by a Civil War!

Forrest Mars Sr. was inspired to create the now famous M&M chocolate candies when he saw soldiers fighting during the Spanish Civil War. The soldiers were eating chocolate pellets with a hard shell of tempered chocolate. This prevented the chocolate inside from melting and them getting sticky fingers.

M&Ms started production in 1941, and their popularity and their shell were so popular that they, in turn, were used by US soldiers during World War 2! Who knew that M&Ms had such a violent beginning.

Who invented the bulletproof vest? The answer might surprise you!

You might imagine the inventor being someone from the Army or a policeman, but the true creator was a pizza delivery man! On July 21st, 1969, Richard Davis was delivering pizzas in Detroit when he was held up at gunpoint!

Luckily for the former marine, Davis had a gun of his own and shot two of the attackers but was hit twice himself. This incident gave him an idea for people like cops to avoid injury by wearing padding of some kind. The first prototype for the bulletproof vest was created by Davis out of a roll of nylon and the straps from his car’s seatbelt!

He went around to police stations shooting himself in the chest to demonstrate its power. Later, Davis created a second vest design using Kevlar, which is 230% stronger than nylon

Despite Sierra Leone’s rich natural resources, 70% of its people live in poverty!

Sierra Leone is quite wealthy due to its natural resources. It is among the top 10 diamond producing nations in the world. It also is a top producer of titanium and bauxite, and a major producer of gold. The country also has the third largest natural harbor in the world.

Shipping from all over the world takes place in the harbor called Queen Elizabeth II Quay. The country is one of the most religiously tolerant nations in the world with 60% of the population being Muslim. Despite all their natural resources and wealth, the country has a 70% poverty rate on its people. This is pretty notable, because wealth in natural resources usually correlates highly with poverty levels. The country is emerging from a long civil war with signs of economic recovery.

Tha Alien

EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE is defined as life that does not originate from Earth. Referred to as alien life, or simply aliens, these hypothetical forms of life range from simple bacteria-like organisms to beings far more advanced than humans. The development and testing of theories about extraterrestrial life is known as exobiology.
Alien life, such as bacteria, has been theorized to exist in the Solar System and quite possibly throughout the Universe.According to this argument, supported by scientists such as Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking, it would be improbable for life not to exist somewhere other than Earth because our universe is so much vast with so many galaxies and millions of solar systems and billions of planets !!!

It has been scientifically proven that stroking a cat can lower one's blood pressure!

Foxes are essentially nocturnal animals and are the smallest member of the dog family.

*The most common species of the foxes is the red fox, which is about the size of a large cat. It is characterized by a reddish coat, a white underbelly and a bushy tail with a white tip, with some variations depending on the habitat. It is the largest of the fox specie.

*The grey fox is widely found specie that bears resemblance to the red fox. It is slightly smaller and has a grey coat.

*While the red fox prefers open country habitat for survival, the grey fox prefers dense areas such as forests to survive.

*The world’s smallest fox is the Fennec fox, weighing a mere 3.5 pounds. It is normally found in arid regions such as deserts. It has an exceptional hearing capacity and can detect its prey moving underground.

*Foxes are known to have both canine and feline characteristics. Even though they are considered to be a member of the dog family, they have feline characteristics such as vertically slit eyes and retractable claws. They are excellent tree climbers and also play with their prey before killing it, just like a cat.

*The sexual maturity is attained at around 10 months of age. The female fox produces a litter with around 3-5 pups and has a gestation period of 50 to 60 days. The young of a fox is referred to as “kit”.

*Foxes are known to use a wide range of vocalizations and pitch tones to communicate with each other.

*The fox is considered to be a sacred animal in Japan.

The world's Most expensive DOG!

A purebred red TIBETAN MASTIFF, named "BIG SPLASH, was recently sold in China for around ten million yuan (US$1.52m), making it the world's most expensive dog.
Tibetan Mastiffs are huge and fierce guard dogs that have stood watch over nomad camps and monasteries on the Tibetan plateau for centuries.
They are thought to be one of the world's oldest breeds, and legend has it that both Genghis Khan and Lord Buddha kept them.
More recently, however, they have become highly-prized status symbols for China's new rich. The dogs are thought to be a pure "Chinese" breed and they are rarely found outside Tibet, giving them an exclusivity that other breeds cannot match.

THE WHITE GORILLA:

SNOWFLAKE (c. 1964 – November 24, 2003) was an albino gorilla. He was the only known albino gorilla so far, and the most popular resident of the Barcelona Zoo in Catalonia, Spain. He weighs 400 lbs.

In 2011, Snowflake was featured on the Guinness World Records 2012 as a new record entry named "Rarest Gorilla". The book also mentions that unlike other animals that suffer from albinism, Snowflake has blue eyes suggesting that he was a chinchilla albino, caused by the recessive gene mutant gene also found on white tigers.

White Lions

The white lion is occasionally found in wildlife reserves in South Africa. White lions are not a separate subspecies; they are white due to the genetic condition called leucism. They have been said to be indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa for centuries, although the earliest recorded sighting in this region was 1938. White Lions are regarded as divine by locals. It was widely believed that the white lion could not survive in the wild. It is for this reason that now a large part of the population of white lions are in zoos.

It is hard to determine exactly how many white lions there are today. The Global White Lion Protection Trust estimates there are fewer than 300 White Lions world-wide.........

MIRACLE BERRY PLANT

A truly unusual plant, the Miracle Berry Plant (Synsepalum dulcificum) can be an interesting addition to a houseplant collection. A sunny windowsill is all you need to grow this plant that will amaze your friends. The amazing part is what will happen to you when you chew one of the plant’s ¾ to 1 inch long attractive, red fruits. Once the fleshy, tasteless pulp coats your tongue, everything you eat for the next few hours or so will taste sweet. Bite into a lemon or a lime and the distinctive flavors of these fruits will be enjoyed, but their sourness will not pucker your mouth. Even a sip of straight vinegar will taste sweet. The basis for this reaction is the presence of miraculin in the fruit of this species. This taste modifying protein does not actually taste sweet, but apparently it binds to receptors of the taste buds, temporarily changing their function. While the taste modifying capabilities of the fruits have been known for over a century, miraculin was only isolated in the early 1970’s. The exact mechanism of action has yet to be elucidated, but is the subject of research, especially for its potential use as an “artificial sweetener”.

BLOOD LAMP

Invented by Mike Thomspon, an English designer based in The Netherlands. The lamp contains luminol – the same chemical forensic scientists use to check for traces of blood at a crime scence. Luminol reacts with the iron in red blood cells and creates a bright blue glow.

To use the lamp, you first need to mix in an activating powder. Then, you break the glass, cut yourself, and drip blood into the opening.

You have to really decide when to use this lamp because it's only going to work once," Thompson said. "So it makes it kind of a poignant moment."

Thompson designed and produced the lamp in 2007.

Origin of the bendy straw.

At a soda shop in San Francisco in 1937, John Friedman was watching his daughter drink a milkshake & noticed that she had trouble getting to the straw because she was so short. Friedman had an idea & took a few of the straws home. He dropped a screw into the straw & wrapped a piece of dental floss around it, which made impressions in the straw around the thread of the screw. The ridges in the straw made it flexible. By 1939, he was a millionaire from selling his one of a kind invention; the bendy straw.
